Item that looked like gun found at Price
A student at Price Elementary School brought what appeared to be a gun to school March 2, said Krista Stockman, Fort Wayne Community Schools spokeswoman.
Stockman said she could not release any further information on the student and whether he or she had been disciplined. “There was a look-alike gun at Price last week, but no students were in any danger,” she said. Stockman could not say whether the student had been in trouble previously.
Student had hand grenade in backpack
A Kosciusko County middle- school student has been suspended after a teacher found a hand grenade in his backpack.
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s deputies were called to Milford Middle School in Milford early Monday after a teacher reported the finding. The grenade turned out to be nonfunctioning, but still was in violation of Wawasee Community School rules, according to a release from the sheriff’s department.
The boy told police he was given the grenade by a family member, who bought it recently from a show, the release said. The boy said he had been playing with it over the weekend and forgot to take it out of his backpack before school Monday, the release said.
Sentence added
Julian D. Grady, 28, who already had been sentenced to 41 1/2 years in prison, was given another 10 years in prison Monday by Allen Superior Judge John Surbeck for robbing a Sav-A-Lot store in October 2008.
Grady previously had been sentenced for robberies at the Twenty Past Four store, 3138 Broadway, Family Dollar store at 3120 New Haven Ave. and MJs Pizza, 3311 E. State Blvd.
When he was sentenced Monday, he was given credit for 398 days already served in jail and ordered to pay $7,647 in restitution.
Mother pleads
Julianna Williams, found guilty last month of neglect of a dependent in Allen Superior Court after a trial before Judge John Surbeck, pleaded guilty to another charge of the same crime Monday. Her sentencing is scheduled for April 12. She pleaded without any agreement of a recommended sentence.
Williams was charged after her 13-month-old daughter, Regjanae Williams, died in June 2008 after receiving significant doses of morphine. Her convictions last month could result in a prison sentence of six months to three years.
Woman reports attack at Piere’s
A woman was reportedly groped, then punched, by a man at Piere’s nightclub early Sunday.
An off-duty Fort Wayne Police officer working at the club was told by the woman that a man had grabbed her breast, and when she pushed him away, he punched her in the face. He was arrested.
Police probe scam
The Indiana State Police is warning residents about the risks of fraudulent fundraising attempts after reports have flooded police agencies throughout the state.
According to a release from Indiana State Police spokesman David Bursten, solicitors around the state are posing as representatives of the Indiana State Police or other law-enforcement agencies, and ask residents to tape donations to their doors.
The Indiana State Police has begun an investigation into the complaints. Bursten advises residents to be cautious of fundraisers, and to demand ID before handing over donations. When in doubt, call police.
FAFSA deadline
Prospective and current college students are encouraged to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by Wednesday to be considered for state and federal aid. The state has recently started its Cash for College campaign after finding that more than 177,000 Hoosiers gave up thousands of dollars in aid because they missed the FAFSA deadline.
Every year, the federal government provides students with $83 billion in financial aid, and the state contributes an additional $250 million. To be considered for this money, students must fill out the FAFSA correctly and on time. Families can file online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Man in cuffs shot
INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis police say a man in handcuffs was shot in the abdomen while sitting on the steps of a house with several officers nearby.
Police Sgt. Paul Thompson said the 24-year-old man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the Monday night shooting. Thompson says the man had been stopped for driving with a suspended license on the city’s north side. He said two officers were within a few feet of the man and about four others were nearby.
Remains found
RICHMOND — Police say an expert believes human remains found near a state hospital in eastern Indiana had been there at least two years. Two people riding off-road vehicles found the bones Friday in an area bordered by Richmond State Hospital and the Wayne County Fairgrounds. Richmond police Lt. Brad Berner says a forensic anthropologist from the University of Indianapolis visited the site over the weekend and didn’t find any signs of foul play.
Sentence stands for vet-attacker
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana attorney general’s office is opposing a sentence reduction for a man accused of attacking an 83-year-old World War II veteran who offered to help him.
The man who attacked Anthony Udowski has asked the Indiana Court of Appeals to cut his 20-year sentence, but the state opposes 49-year-old Charles A. Boswell Jr.’s request.
The attorney general’s brief says Boswell knocked Udowski down and stomped on his head, damaging his one good eye. Udowski lost his other eye in the Battle of Guadalcanal.
‘Potter’-themed exhibit at Purdue
WEST LAFAYETTE — A traveling exhibit that examines the “Harry Potter” book and movie series’ connections to the Renaissance and the history of science will visit Purdue University beginning this week.
“Harry Potter’s World: Renaissance Science, Magic and Medicine” will be at the John W. Hicks Undergraduate Library from Wednesday through April 8. Purdue says it’s one of 12 U.S. libraries selected to participate in the tour coordinated by the American Library Association.
DNR rec guide out
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says its free 2010 Indiana Recreation Guide is now available at various retail outlets, DNR properties and at dnr.IN.gov. The agency says usage of Indiana’s state parks has increased the last few years. Gate revenue increased 8 percent from 2008 to 2009. Total campground use increased 10 percent, and operating receipts rose 7 percent during the same period.
